The great Kazakh poet, thinker and enlightener. His poems and the Book of Words shaped modern Kazakh literature.
Ibrahim Qunanbaiuly, known as Abai, studied at a madrasah and a Russian school. His poetry, the Book of Words, and translations of Pushkin, Lermontov, Krylov, Goethe and Byron widened Kazakh written culture. He also renewed verse metres and composed music.
